MONROEVILLE MALL ARCHIVE ROADMAP
Preserving the Mall—One Store, One Artifact, and One Memory at a Time
The Monroeville Mall Archive is an evolving historical preservation project dedicated to documenting the complete history of the Monroeville Mall, its businesses, its architecture, its community, and its lasting cultural legacy.
This roadmap outlines the archive’s major research and development priorities through December 2027. Each phase represents a focused effort to reconstruct a different part of the mall’s history while continuing to improve the archive’s technology, accessibility, and visitor experience.
Roadmap dates represent target development windows and may evolve as new historical materials, research leads, and community contributions become available.
THE 1978 STORE DIRECTORY
July–December 2026
Reconstructing the Mall of the Dawn of the Dead Era
The first phase concentrates on the Monroeville Mall as it existed in 1978—the year most closely associated with George A. Romero’s Dawn of the Dead. Every identifiable business appearing in the 1978 mall directory will be researched, documented, and connected to its original location within the mall.
Primary Objectives
- Research and update every store, restaurant, service, kiosk, entertainment venue, and mall facility listed in the 1978 directory.
- Document each business’s operating history at Monroeville Mall, including known opening dates, closing dates, relocations, expansions, and replacement tenants.
- Research the broader corporate or independent history of each business.
- Connect store entries to their original unit numbers and locations on the digitized 1978 floor plan.
- Complete and refine the major Monroeville Mall milestone histories spanning the mall’s construction, opening, development, redevelopment, and cultural legacy.
- Expand individual store pages to include:

Phase Completion Goal
The phase will be considered substantially complete when every identifiable 1978 directory tenant has a researched archive entry, an associated mall location, documented sources, and links to all currently available related artifacts.
THE 1969 GRAND OPENING DIRECTORY
January–April 2027
Reconstructing Opening-Day Monroeville Mall
The second phase will return to the beginning. Using original directories, newspaper coverage, advertisements, photographs, architectural records, and other surviving documentation, the archive will reconstruct the Monroeville Mall as it appeared when it opened in May 1969.
Primary Objectives
- Create a preservation-quality, high-resolution digital reconstruction of the original 1969 Monroeville Mall floor plan.
- Identify original store spaces, anchor buildings, entrances, public areas, service areas, kiosks, offices, and mall amenities.
- Build an original 1969 store directory organized by store name, store unit number, and physical location within the mall.
- Create individual archive entries for the mall’s original tenants.
- Research each store’s:
- Opening history at Monroeville Mall
- Original location and unit number
- Length of operation at the mall
- Known relocations or expansions
- Broader company or business history
- Successor tenants
- Opening history at Monroeville Mall
- Connect original tenants to surviving advertisements, photographs, articles, directories, promotional materials, and other artifacts.
- Expand documentation of the Ice Palace, Clock of Nations, Community Room, anchor stores, mall offices, restaurants, and other original features.
- Continue performance, mobile, accessibility, navigation, and interface improvements throughout the archive.
Phase Completion Goal
The phase will be considered substantially complete when visitors can explore a high-resolution 1969 floor plan, select an original store location, and access the documented history and surviving artifacts associated with that space.
ARTIFACT EXPANSION
May–August 2027
Expanding the Historical Record
Once the 1978 and 1969 directory foundations are established, the archive will begin a concentrated expansion of its historical collections. This phase will focus on acquiring, digitizing, restoring, cataloging, and connecting materials that provide evidence of how the mall changed over time.
Primary Objectives
- Intensify research and acquisition efforts to significantly expand the archive’s artifact catalog.
- Locate additional photographs, directories, advertisements, newspaper articles, maps, architectural materials, promotional items, documents, memorabilia, and personal collections.
- Expand outreach to former mall employees, store owners, managers, contractors, shoppers, photographers, filmmakers, and community organizations.
- Develop themed artifact-collection initiatives for underrepresented years, businesses, and areas of the mall.
- Expand the archive’s video collection and Monroeville Mall Archive YouTube channel.
- Preserve television commercials, news reports, home movies, interviews, promotional footage, convention recordings, and appearances of the mall in film and television.
- Add captions, transcripts, dates, descriptive metadata, source information, and historical context to video artifacts whenever possible.
- Digitally restore damaged or low-quality historical materials while clearly distinguishing restored presentations from original source files.
- Improve artifact relationships so visitors can move between:
- Stores
- Historical milestones
- Floor-plan locations
- People
- Events
- Photographs
- Documents
- Videos
- Stores
- Create curated digital exhibits that bring related artifacts together into larger historical narratives.
- Establish recurring “Missing from the Archive” features encouraging members to help locate specific photographs, directories, advertisements, or information.
Phase Completion Goal
This phase will establish a substantially broader and more interconnected collection representing the mall’s complete lifespan—not only its opening and its association with Dawn of the Dead, but also the everyday businesses, employees, shoppers, events, and community experiences that defined the mall across generations.
COMMUNITY MEMORY & LONG-TERM PRESERVATION
September–December 2027
Building a Living Historical Archive
The final scheduled phase of this roadmap will strengthen the archive as both a research resource and a community preservation project. Historical records explain what existed; personal memories help explain what those places meant.
Primary Objectives
- Establish a structured oral-history and personal-recollections program.
- Invite former employees, business owners, mall personnel, shoppers, performers, contractors, and visitors to document their experiences.
- Add tools for associating personal stories with specific stores, years, events, and mall locations.
- Develop curated virtual exhibitions around major subjects such as:
- Opening-Day Monroeville Mall
- The Ice Palace
- The 1978 Mall
- Dawn of the Dead
- Restaurants and Food-Court History
- Mall Entertainment
- Holiday Traditions
- Storefronts Through the Decades
- The Mall’s Final Years

- Improve archive search, filtering, cross-referencing, citations, and source transparency.
- Standardize historical metadata, dates, provenance records, and archival descriptions.
- Strengthen long-term digital preservation procedures, including redundant backups, file-integrity verification, preservation copies, and structured data exports.
- Expand accessibility through improved captions, transcripts, alternative text, keyboard navigation, and mobile usability.
- Publish contributor acknowledgments and recognize members who provide significant historical materials or research.
- Create a continuing development log documenting completed work, newly discovered information, corrections, and future priorities.
Phase Completion Goal
By the conclusion of this phase, the Monroeville Mall Archive will function not simply as a collection of historical materials, but as an interconnected and community-supported record of the mall’s architectural, commercial, cinematic, and social history.
