Monroeville Mall demolition timeline up in the air, according to mayor
Description
Monroeville Mall demolition timeline in doubt as mayor says no formal plans have been filed. Monroeville Mall is still open; grant application seeks state funding toward demolition. The slated April 2027 demolition of the Monroeville Mall site is now uncertain, according to Monroeville Mayor Dennis Biondo.
"We're not sure that the April date is going to happen any longer, but we've had no formal plans that said that it's not going to happen or that they're going to go forward with it," Biondo said Friday.
The mall remains open for business. Biondo said that nothing has been submitted to the municipality yet regarding the demolition or future plans for the site.
When asked about the community's reaction to the eventual loss of the mall, which has stood for more than half a century, Biondo acknowledged mixed feelings among residents.
"There is some nostalgia with the mall. I think it's Dawn of the Dead Weekend this weekend, actually. That's one thing that people remember. I talked to (Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development) Secretary (Rick) Siger today about going to the mall, and being in the mall as a teenager," Biondo said. "So obviously, people don't want to lose the mall. But then you also have another segment of the population that just realizes, and I think that's the majority of people realize that shopping is just different nowadays."
Walmart bought the Monroeville Mall site in early 2025, and demolition plans were revealed in October. An application was filed for a $7.5 million state grant through the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program to put toward the proposed demolition.
In the application, it says the property would be turned into entertainment, retail and office space, and areas for public use.
