Welcome to the Monroeville Mall Archive Forums.

This community exists to preserve, discuss, and better understand the history of Monroeville Mall, Dawn of the Dead, and the people, places, media, and memories connected to them. Whether you are here as a researcher, fan, former employee, collector, photographer, or first-time visitor, you are welcome here.
These guidelines are intended to keep the forums useful, respectful, and enjoyable for everyone.

1. Be respectful
Treat other members with courtesy, even when you disagree.
Healthy discussion and debate are encouraged. Personal attacks, insults, harassment, intimidation, baiting, or hostile behavior are not. Disagreement over film history, mall history, preservation, releases, memorabilia, or interpretations is fine. Turning that disagreement into a personal argument is not.
Please address the topic, not the person.

2. Keep posts relevant and constructive
Try to post in the forum that best matches your topic and keep discussion reasonably on-topic.
A little drift in conversation is natural, but repeated off-topic posting, derailing threads, or posting only to provoke reactions lowers the quality of the forum for everyone. If a conversation moves into a new subject, consider starting a new thread.
Posts should aim to contribute something useful, thoughtful, informative, or engaging.

3. No spam, self-promotion, or disruptive advertising
Do not use the forums to flood threads, promote unrelated products or services, post repetitive content, or drive traffic to outside sites without relevance to the discussion.
Relevant links to research, media, archives, articles, or personal projects may be shared when they genuinely add value to a discussion. Excessive promotion or link dropping may be removed.

4. Respect the historical and archival focus of the site
This forum is part of an archive-oriented community. Whenever possible, aim for accuracy, context, and clarity.
When sharing photos, documents, memories, claims, or research:
  • provide dates if known
  • identify locations if known
  • distinguish fact from memory or opinion
  • explain where material came from when possible
It is perfectly fine not to know everything. Guesswork should simply be identified as guesswork.

5. Personal memories are welcome — present them honestly
Firsthand stories, recollections, and oral history are an important part of preserving the past. At the same time, memory is not always exact.
If you are sharing a personal memory, do your best to present it accurately and note when details are approximate. Other members may respectfully ask questions or offer corrections based on documents, photos, or records.
That is part of the archival process and should be handled in good faith by everyone involved.

6. Use clear titles and readable posts
When creating a thread, choose a title that helps others understand what it is about.
Good thread titles:
  • 1983 food court photos
  • Help identifying this storefront
  • Dawn filming location near JCPenney
  • Kaufmann’s timeline question
Less useful thread titles:
  • Help
  • Question
  • Wow
  • Look at this
Please also try to write in a readable way. Perfect grammar is not required, but overly vague, all-caps, or extremely low-effort posts may be moderated.

7. Post material in the appropriate forum
Please use the forum structure as intended.
For example:
  • account or site issues belong in Archive Help
  • introductions belong in New Members
  • store and tenant discussion belongs in Stores, Restaurants & Businesses
  • film-specific discussion belongs in Dawn of the Dead sections
  • unidentified material belongs in Artifact Identification
Threads may be moved by staff to keep the board organized.

8. No illegal, harmful, or abusive content
The following are not allowed:
  • threats or incitement
  • hate speech
  • discriminatory or abusive content
  • doxxing or sharing private personal information
  • stalking or targeted harassment
  • sexually explicit content unrelated to the forum’s purpose
  • illegal material or instructions for illegal activity
Any content of this kind may be removed immediately, and accounts may be restricted or banned.

9. Respect privacy
Do not post someone else’s private information without consent.
This includes:
  • home addresses
  • phone numbers
  • private email addresses
  • private social media information
  • non-public identifying details
Use caution when posting about private individuals, especially former employees, collectors, or community members. Public historical discussion is allowed; exposing private personal information is not.

10. Copyright and source respect
Please only upload or share material you have the right to post, or material you reasonably believe may be shared for discussion, preservation, commentary, or identification purposes.
If you are posting scans, photos, clippings, screenshots, or other media:
  • credit the source when known
  • do not remove known creator attribution
  • do not falsely claim ownership of another person’s work
If you are a rights holder and believe material has been posted improperly, contact the site staff so it can be reviewed.

11. No buying, selling, or trading unless explicitly permitted
Unless the forum later adds a dedicated marketplace with separate rules, do not use threads for commercial sales, auctions, or trading arrangements.
Discussion of collectibles and memorabilia is welcome. Sales activity is not, unless clearly authorized by staff.

12. Avoid duplicate threads
Before starting a new topic, it helps to check whether the same subject already has an active thread.
If there is an existing thread for a store, a film release, a filming location, or a known archive project, adding to that discussion is usually better than creating a duplicate. Staff may merge overlapping threads when needed.

13. Disputes with moderation should stay civil
If a post is edited, moved, locked, or removed, do not start public arguments about moderation inside unrelated threads.
If you have a concern, contact staff calmly and directly. Reasonable questions are welcome. Aggressive or repeated public disputes about moderation decisions may themselves become a moderation issue.

14. Staff decisions and enforcement
Moderators and administrators may take action when needed to protect the forum and its members.
Actions may include:
  • editing or removing posts
  • moving or locking threads
  • issuing warnings
  • temporary restrictions
  • permanent bans for serious or repeated violations
Not every situation will fit neatly into a written rule. Staff may act in the best interest of the community when behavior is clearly disruptive, harmful, or contrary to the purpose of the site.

15. Help us preserve the history well
This forum works best when members contribute in a spirit of curiosity, accuracy, generosity, and respect.
You do not need to be an expert to participate. Some members bring firsthand memories. Others bring research skills, photographs, documents, technical knowledge, or enthusiasm. All of that has value here.
The goal is not only discussion, but preservation.

Posting standards summary
Before posting, please ask yourself:
  • Is this in the right forum?
  • Is my title clear?
  • Is my post respectful?
  • Am I contributing something useful?
  • If I am making a claim, can I add context or a source?
  • If I am sharing a memory, am I presenting it honestly?
  • If I am uploading media, do I have the right to share it?
If the answer is yes, you are probably in good shape.

Final note, we are glad you are here!

Whether you remember the mall from decades ago, discovered it through Dawn of the Dead, worked in one of its stores, collect memorabilia, or simply want to learn more, your participation helps build a richer historical record for everyone.

Thank you for helping make the Monroeville Mall Archive Forums a thoughtful and welcoming place.
