Store History at the Mall
DiPomodoro (often spelled DiPomodoro’s or DiPalmadoro’s in memories) was a popular Italian restaurant located inside the Monroeville Mall during its heyday in the 1970s and early 1980s. It was famously located on the lower level, adjacent to the "Ice Palace" indoor skating rink, allowing diners to watch skaters while eating.
Key Details About DiPomodoro
- Location: Lower level, next to the ice skating rink.
- Opening (1974): The restaurant opened in December 1974. It took over the space previously occupied by Schrafft’s, an upscale dining establishment that had been there since the mall opened in 1969.
- Atmosphere: It was a staple of the mall's lower level, famously known for its windows overlooking the Ice Palace skating rink.
- Menu Favorites: Patrons frequently recalled the meatballs, pizza, salads, and spumoni for dessert.
- Closing (1984): The restaurant closed in July 1984. This coincided with the permanent closure of the ice rink in March 1984 to make way for the mall's first food court.
The restaurant was a popular spot for lunch and dinner, often mentioned alongside other nostalgic mall staples like Pup-A-Go-Go (hot dogs) and the Brown Derby
