Store History at the Mall

Foxmoor Casuals was a popular women's fashion retailer at Monroeville Mall during the 1970s and 1980s. The store is best remembered by pop culture fans as a visible backdrop in George A. Romero's 1978 horror classic Dawn of the Dead, which was filmed almost entirely inside the mall.

  • Location and Reputation: Foxmoor was located on the mall's upper level and was known for selling "hip clothes" aimed at juniors. In Dawn of the Dead, characters are famously seen surveying the mall's ground floor from a railing directly in front of the Foxmoor storefront.
  • The Brand's Roots: The Foxmoor story actually began in Pittsburgh in 1963 as a 16-store chain called Foxwood Casuals.
  • Closure: The chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 1990. While some locations were sold to Edison Brothers and converted to other brands like 5-7-9 or Wild Pair, the remaining stores were liquidated and closed by 1991
