Spencer Gifts

Spencer’s (formerly Spencer Gifts) is currently open at Monroeville Mall and holds the distinction of being one of the only two original tenants still operating in the same location since the mall opened in November 1967.

Store Details and Status

• Legacy: Alongside JCPenney, Spencer's is the only store from the 1967 inaugural lineup that has not closed or moved.
• Current Location: It is situated on Level 1 of the mall (Suite 132A).
• Future Outlook: While the mall was sold to Walmart in early 2025 and is slated for full demolition to become the "Monroeville Mall Gateway" mixed-use development, current plans indicate that existing tenants have been asked to vacate by April 2027. Until then, the store remains open for business as usual.
• Offerings: The store continues to sell its signature mix of pop culture merchandise, including:
  • Novelties: Lava lamps, black-light posters, and gag gifts.
  • Apparel: Graphic tees (including "Humps" brand), band merchandise, and seasonal costumes.
  • Accessories: Body jewelry, collectibles, and home décor.

Connection to "Dawn of the Dead"
Like Foxmoor Casuals, Spencer Gifts was a functioning part of the mall during the winter of 1977–1978 when George A. Romero filmed Dawn of the Dead. While not featured as prominently as other storefronts, it is often cited by fans as a key part of the mall's "consumerist character" that the film satirized.
